When it comes to twins, the picture that clicks in the minds of both is that they are dupes of each other. However, there are two types of identical twins—fraternal and identical. In fact, even ‘identical twins’ doesn’t mean they will be exactly the same by their looks or personalities. Instead, identical or fraternal is usually determined by the process of embryo formation.

Bringing one life together is a miracle in itself, but bringing two lives together is beyond magic! According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, almost 3 out of 1000 births are identical twins. So, if you have identical twins or are expecting, this article is for you.

Read below to learn what every parent should know about identical twins.

The Science Behind It

Identical twins are born when the fertilized egg splits into two developing embryos. As per NCBI 2023 report, this occurs in about 0.3 percent of births when two individuals are born with the same genetic material. Though the genetic material is the same, it isn’t exactly the same. Various environmental factors also lead to changes in personality and appearance.

Complications Associated With Twin Pregnancy

Twin pregnancies come with several health complications and risks. Therefore, it is important for expecting parents to understand these concerns. Here are some of the common complications associated with twin pregnancies (as per NCBI 2023 report):

Preterm Birth

About 60 percent of twins are born prematurely, before 37 weeks. Preterm delivery often leads to respiratory issues and a higher risk of infection.

Low Birth Weight

Only 50 percent of the twins are born with a low birth weight of 5.5 pounds. Such low weight at birth results in issues such as low blood sugar, an inability to maintain temperature, and other developmental concerns.

Gestational Diabetes

There is an increased risk of gestational diabetes due to hormonal changes in cases of twin pregnancy.

Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is another possible complication and is usually marked by high blood pressure or severe organ damage. Moreover, this condition can also lead to placental abruption.

Cesarean Delivery

Almost 75 percent of twins are delivered using the cesarean delivery procedure, which comes with its own related challenges.

Placental Concerns

Placental abruption are some of the placental complications that are associated with twin pregnancies and can lead to severe bleeding.

Parenting Identical Twins: Double Trouble, Double Fun

Multiple diaper changes, endless feeding, and uncountable sleepless nights—times two—this is what having identical twins can look like. However, this is just one side of the coin! Parenting identical twins is also about enjoying the special bond your little ones share. They might even develop their own “twin speak.”

When it comes to parenting, it’s important to maintain their individuality from a young age. This will help them come up with their own unique personalities.

Another question that may arise during the early years is whether to put them in the same class or separate them. The answer lies in the personalities of the twins, whether they go together well or want an opportunity to grow independently. You can even inform the school about the individuals and their different personalities to avoid confusion in the classroom.

Identical twins also share a special bond, and some even report sharing each other’s emotions and sensations. This is also known as “twin telepathy.”

However, a balanced life outside their relationship with siblings is equally important, which means you must also encourage them to have a friend circle so that they can spend time individually too.

Takeaway

Raising identical twins is an incredible experience for parents. However, it’s important for parents to put in extra effort to develop the confidence and uniqueness in their personalities while also cherishing their special connection.
