Changes in seasons bring forth the many faces of Mother Nature. Seasons help us appreciate the beauty of the world around us. The rainy season, more than any other, brings life and vitality to everything in our daily life.

Monsoon in India comes right after the summer as a welcome reprieve from the agonising heat. It is usually the beginning of the academic year when toddlers and preschoolers are just starting playgroup or kindergarten. Wet clothes, rain wear and the occasional lightning and thunder make children irritable and tough to manage. Here we will look into how to class activities to help keep the little ones occupied while also learning new things.

In this series of activities, we will be recreating elements of the rainy season and harnessing them to create art. Doing this helps children not only understand but also remember the seasons and elements of each one. Read on for some ideas on monsoon themed activities to do with toddlers.

Game One : Elements: Wind, Monsoon

Supplies Needed:

• Paper
• Paint
• Straw
• Newspaper to cover surrounding surfaces

How To Play:

Toddlers are too young to be exposed to the actual elements of the weather in the rainy season. Instead of using the actual wind itself, we can get the kids to disperse the paint using a straw the way they think the wind would do it. Remember to teach them to use the straw to blow outwards and NOT suck inwards. This is also a great opportunity to discuss wind and some more related concepts.

Game Two – Element: Rain

Supplies Needed:

• Water Colors
• Medium Weight Paper
• Tape
• Water
• Dropper
• Towel
• Vertical Surface like an Easel Board

How To Play:

Put the water colours into a tray with little compartments for each shade. Tape the tray onto the easel and then invite the children to fill up the compartments with colours of their choice. Once this is done, let the kids spray water directly at the paint and have them observe what happens. You can use that conversation to segue into simple scientific concepts like gravity, density of material, the power of moving water and much more with this play station.

You’ll likely find that the masterpieces thus produced will not be very appealing but it’s the process that matters more than anything.
