How to Deal With a Lazy Child: Tips To Know

By Samridhi|3 - 4 mins read| July 01, 2024

There might be days when your child shows absolutely no interest in play, learning, or interactions. This is normal.

But what is not normative is if this turns into a daily habit.

Whenever you enter their room and notice them having no curiosity about the world around them and having the ‘don’t care’ attitude for everything almost every day, it’s probably time to get alarmed. Moreover, if your child likes to do only those tasks that require very little to no effort, your child can be the ‘lazy one.’

Such kids will repeat things over and over to the extent that you get frustrated, eventually resulting in furious reactions. However, this is where you need to take extra care in warding off the laziness from your child.

However, amidst this, it is important to figure out whether your child is actually lazy or something else when it comes to their favorite tasks.

Read this article to explore some of the best tips on how to deal with a lazy child.

Passion and Responsibilities

You must have noticed how carefully your child arranges the Lego, but when it comes to picking up their socks and putting them back into place, they cannot muster up their energy. This simply indicates that nothing could be better if their interests are combined with their responsibilities.

For example, if your child loves their pet, let them have their responsibilities too, from taking them on a walk to taking care of their diet. Perhaps this way they will be able to have that energy for their favorite things without even realizing they’re doing some additional work.

Give Choices

Sometimes, your child might be resisting tasks just because he thinks he has no control over their own activities. Therefore, it is important to give them as many choices as you can.

If they don’t want to clean their room at the moment, you may ask them to maybe clean their room after dinner.

This way, they will have the independence to follow their choices without resisting any tasks. On some days, when they don’t like arranging their stuff back, maybe you could give them the choice to dust or vacuum the couches. It’s as simple as that!

Be The Detective

Before you start dealing with your child’s laziness, take a second to think about the reason why your child feels unmotivated. They might be overwhelmed by school assignments, lack interest in some subjects, or are simply tired and might need a break.

Perhaps it’s time to sit down with your kid and have the open conversation he has been looking for. A heartfelt chat can do wonders. Who knows, the problem might be as simple as a lack of sleep or difficulty understanding a subject? Listen to them carefully, and then address the solutions so they can catch up on their missing motivation.

Kids Are Like Clay: They Do What They See

The truth is, kids like imitating their parents. Thus, it’s important to learn that kids do what they actually see. So, if you’re showing hints of laziness, this may be the reason why you’re lacking energy too.

On the other hand, if you’re dealing with responsibilities diligently and with a positive attitude, your child might get encouraged to reciprocate the same energy into his own responsibilities.

The other way around is to include them in your tasks. If you’re cooking, you could ask them to help with chopping vegetables or washing a few dishes. So, let your children lead by example and follow your approach of positivity and responsibility.

While laziness is easily manageable, in some cases, the reason behind your child being lazy could be anxiety. You can also read our article to learn how you can deal with anxiety in your child.
