Parents often wonder, is it possible for me to boost the immunity of my child? Is it possible to take some measures so that my child gets sick less often? Are some things better than others for raising a healthy child? Is immunity something which can be influenced externally?
The answer to all these questions is yes. It is possible to take simple measures which improves the immunity of a child. It does not include some superfood or overnight remedies but small steps which when followed consistently make a big difference. A few tips for improving immunity of your child are:
1. Breastfeed your baby
Breastfeeding your baby helps to improve the general health and also the immunity of the child. Breast Milk contains antibodies which are transferred from the mother to the child and helps protect the child against infection in the first few months of life. Breast Milk also contains other anti infective factors such as interferons. Children who are breastfed have a better immunity and are healthier as compared to children fed on cow’s milk or formula.
2. Keep your child up to date on vaccines
Vaccination is very important for the health and immunity of your child. Vaccinations are given to the child for protection against specific diseases. The age at which the vaccine is to be given is decided by health organisations and should be followed according for your child.
3. Ensure proper nutrition of your child
A good and balanced diet goes a long way in improving the immunity of your child. When your child gets proper nutrients and minerals in the required amount, it makes the body strong enough to fight infections.
4. Ensure your child gets proper sleep
Sleep also plays an important role in maintaining the immunity of your child. Make sure your child gets enough sleep daily. A child should get around 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.
5. Do not forget simple precautions
When it comes to healthcare, simplicity is the best. The basic and simple precautions can go a long way in helping your child have a strong immune system. The basics of handling your baby with clean hands, encouraging your children to wash hands before having food, wearing a mask if sick, coughing and sneezing in a handkerchief are a few which should be kept in mind and taught to your child.
6. Do not overuse antibiotics
You should give your child antibiotics only when prescribed by their doctor. Overuse of antibiotics and using them improperly can make the bacteria and other organisms in the body of your child resistant to the said antibiotic. This can make your child more prone to falling sick.
7. Help your child manage stress
Being stressed out due to any reason has a negative effect on the health and immunity of the body. You should help your child manage stress effectively and minimise it to keep a good immune system.
8. Other things to keep in mind
As a parent you would never want your child to fall sick. But you need to understand that a limited bout of infections or flu per year is normal for a child. You should also know that dirt and germs aren’t always the enemies. If your child is exposed to them in a limited way, the immune system of the child is more likely to grow strong. So, let your child go outdoors and play instead of making them coop up in a completely sterile environment.
